Can a G1 driver go on the highway?

Short answer

G1 drivers generally cannot drive on specified high-speed expressways. An exception applies when the accompanying driver is a licensed Ontario driving instructor.

Make it practical

What to do

Use professional instruction to learn expressway skills when appropriate, and check the official list of restricted roads rather than guessing from how many lanes a road has.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Assuming every road posted at 80 km/h is automatically prohibited—or that every road called a highway is automatically allowed.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Put the official requirement into a simple timeline, including eligibility, waiting periods and your expiry date. Administrative surprises are rarely educational.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
