Questions / Licensing and G1

Answer first · reviewed August 2026

What can I drive with a G1 licence?

Short answer

A G1 is a learner’s Class G licence. You may practise in an appropriate Class G vehicle only while following all G1 restrictions, including the qualified accompanying-driver requirement.

Make it practical

What to do

Before driving, confirm the vehicle is insured and legal, the accompanying driver qualifies and everyone understands who is supervising whom.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Treating a G1 like a limited G2. It is supervised practice, not independent driving permission.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Put the official requirement into a simple timeline, including eligibility, waiting periods and your expiry date. Administrative surprises are rarely educational.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
