Questions / Licensing and G1

Answer first · reviewed August 2026

What if my novice licence expires before I pass the G test?

Short answer

Expiry can interrupt the graduated-licensing path and may require reapplying or retesting, depending on your timing and circumstances. Do not assume a booked test automatically extends the licence.

Make it practical

What to do

Check your card now. If the date is close, contact DriveTest or ServiceOntario for the rule that applies to your exact stage.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Waiting for the last available appointment and leaving no room for weather, a failed attempt or an out-of-order vehicle.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Put the official requirement into a simple timeline, including eligibility, waiting periods and your expiry date. Administrative surprises are rarely educational.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
