How can I tell if a driving instructor is good?

Short answer

A good instructor gives specific, calm directions, explains the reason behind a correction, keeps records, respects boundaries and gradually reduces prompts as you improve.

Make it practical

What to do

After each lesson, you should know what improved, what remains unsafe and exactly what to practise. Ask for a written progress summary if the feedback stays vague.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Mistaking constant criticism for high standards, or constant praise for progress.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Ask the same written questions of two or three approved providers. Comparable answers reveal far more than a star score floating without context.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
