Answer first · reviewed August 2026

When must I yield to pedestrians while turning?

Short answer

Yield whenever a pedestrian has the right-of-way or your movement would endanger them. Scan both the crosswalk you enter and the one you cross while turning.

Make it practical

What to do

Look for late runners, children, mobility devices and cyclists approaching the crossing.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Watching only oncoming cars during a left turn and discovering the pedestrian after the car starts moving.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Name the hazard you are managing during practice, then repeat the decision in a different location. Good judgment should survive a new street name.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
