Can an experienced newcomer take the Ontario G test directly in 2026?

Short answer

It depends on the exchange jurisdiction. Applicants from jurisdictions without an Ontario exchange agreement can no longer use foreign experience to go directly to the G test: since July 1, 2026, they must pass G2 and wait at least 12 months before G. Direct exchanges may still apply to eligible drivers from agreement jurisdictions.

Make it practical

What to do

Confirm the current DriveTest rule for the issuing jurisdiction before booking. Even when an exchange is available, practise Ontario signs, right-of-way and highway norms.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Equating years of driving with eligibility for a direct G test under the post-July 2026 rules.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Separate driving experience from Ontario-rule knowledge. A short diagnostic lesson can identify local habits to adjust without treating you like a complete beginner.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
