Can I exchange a foreign driver’s licence in Ontario in 2026?

Short answer

Ontario has direct exchange agreements with certain jurisdictions. For drivers from non-agreement jurisdictions, a rule effective July 1, 2026 limits verified foreign-experience credit to 12 months and requires the G2 road test followed by at least 12 more months before the G test.

Make it practical

What to do

Check DriveTest’s current country-specific path and bring the original licence, required translation and official experience documents for your case.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Using a friend’s successful document list when their issuing country, arrival date and experience were different.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Separate driving experience from Ontario-rule knowledge. A short diagnostic lesson can identify local habits to adjust without treating you like a complete beginner.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
