How do I get credit for foreign driving experience in Ontario?

Short answer

Ontario can credit accepted documents, but the route depends on whether the issuing jurisdiction has an exchange agreement. Since July 1, 2026, applicants from non-agreement jurisdictions can receive no more than 12 months of verified foreign-experience credit.

Make it practical

What to do

Obtain official authentication or experience letters before travel where possible, confirm translation rules and check the current DriveTest path for the issuing country.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Assuming the issue date printed on an old licence proves the full driving history Ontario needs.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Separate driving experience from Ontario-rule knowledge. A short diagnostic lesson can identify local habits to adjust without treating you like a complete beginner.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
