Questions / G2 road test

Answer first · reviewed August 2026

Do shoulder checks need to be obvious on the road test?

Short answer

They need to be real and timely. The examiner must be able to see that you checked the blind spot, but exaggerated theatre can distract from actual observation.

Make it practical

What to do

Move your head enough to look into the blind area just before the lateral movement.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Checking early, then moving after the blind spot could have changed.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Practise the skill on several unfamiliar roads until you can perform it safely without a prompt. The route can change; the habit must travel with you.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
