Questions / G2 road test

Answer first · reviewed August 2026

How often should I check my mirrors on the road test?

Short answer

There is no useful metronome rule. Scan mirrors regularly and before changing speed, direction or position, while keeping most attention on the road ahead.

Make it practical

What to do

Build mirror checks into natural triggers: after turns, before braking, before lane changes and when traffic conditions change.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Snapping your head at a fixed interval and missing the pedestrian in front of you.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Practise the skill on several unfamiliar roads until you can perform it safely without a prompt. The route can change; the habit must travel with you.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
