Questions / G2 road test

Answer first · reviewed August 2026

Should I drive exactly at the speed limit during the test?

Short answer

A posted limit is the maximum in good conditions, not a target you must hit at all costs. Drive reasonably near it when conditions allow and reduce speed when hazards require it.

Make it practical

What to do

Practise holding stable speed while scanning signs. Explain nothing unless needed; your speed choice should make sense from the road.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Driving far below the limit from nerves when the road is clear, causing unnecessary traffic disruption.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Practise the skill on several unfamiliar roads until you can perform it safely without a prompt. The route can change; the habit must travel with you.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
