Can I use a backup camera on the Ontario road test?

Short answer

No. Ontario says backup cameras and other electronic driving aids may not be used during a road test. Use direct observation, mirrors and shoulder checks instead.

Make it practical

What to do

Practise reversing with direct observation, mirror checks and shoulder checks. Do not use the backup-camera display during the test.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Looking at the camera by habit and forgetting to turn and scan around the vehicle.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Rehearse the logistics once: route to the centre, check-in information, vehicle controls and the backup plan if the test cannot proceed.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
