Questions / Parking and manoeuvres

Answer first · reviewed August 2026

How close should I be to the curb when parked?

Short answer

Finish reasonably close and parallel without contacting or mounting the curb. The exact safe position depends on the road and vehicle.

Make it practical

What to do

Use the passenger mirror for position while still turning to observe around the car.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Fixating on a centimetre target and forgetting the cyclist approaching from behind.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Slow-speed control improves through short, frequent sessions. Stop whenever the setup becomes unsafe, observe again and correct deliberately.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
