Questions / Parking and manoeuvres

Answer first · reviewed August 2026

How should I parallel park for the road test?

Short answer

Set up parallel and reasonably close to the target vehicle, reverse slowly while scanning all around, use reference points that fit your car and finish safely positioned near the curb.

Make it practical

What to do

Practise the geometry in several vehicles and spaces, including safe corrections.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Memorizing a steering recipe without noticing that the reference vehicle is a different size.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Slow-speed control improves through short, frequent sessions. Stop whenever the setup becomes unsafe, observe again and correct deliberately.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
