Questions / Parking and manoeuvres

Answer first · reviewed August 2026

When should I use the parking brake on the road test?

Short answer

Use it when securing the vehicle during parking or when the examiner instructs you to park. Know the control in your test vehicle before the appointment.

Make it practical

What to do

Make ‘secure the vehicle’ one consistent finishing routine: brake, transmission, parking brake, wheels where required.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Searching between the seats for an unfamiliar electronic switch while the car is not fully secured.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Slow-speed control improves through short, frequent sessions. Stop whenever the setup becomes unsafe, observe again and correct deliberately.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
