Questions / G road test

Answer first · reviewed August 2026

What following distance should I leave on the G test?

Short answer

Leave enough time and space to stop safely; increase it in poor weather, at higher speed or behind vehicles that block your view. A rigid number cannot cover every condition.

Make it practical

What to do

Use a fixed roadside point to measure your time gap during practice and notice how speed changes the physical distance.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Drifting closer because the examiner asked for a lane change and you are waiting for a gap.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Build real highway repetition with a qualified supervisor. Merge, change lanes, follow and exit in different traffic instead of saving the entire experience for one mock test.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
