Questions / G road test

Answer first · reviewed August 2026

How fast should I merge on the G test?

Short answer

Use the acceleration lane to approach the speed of traffic while respecting conditions and choosing a safe gap. Merging dramatically below traffic speed can create risk.

Make it practical

What to do

Look early, build speed decisively, signal, check the blind spot and adjust into the selected gap.

Easy to miss

The common trap

Waiting until the lane ends to discover both the speedometer and the traffic beside you.

Turn knowledge into a habit

How to practise it

Build real highway repetition with a qualified supervisor. Merge, change lanes, follow and exit in different traffic instead of saving the entire experience for one mock test.

When a rule, road sign or examiner instruction conflicts with an internet tip, use the official rule and the safe decision. The internet has many talents; wearing a reflective examiner vest is not one of them.
